Nosferatu is an adaptation of Bram Stoker’s gothic novel Dracula. Murnau changed the character’s name because he didn’t have the rights to adapt the book, in hopes of avoiding a lawsuit. He was still sued by Stoker’s family, and the world gained this German expressionist cinema’s masterpiece. Egger’s American version of Nosferatu will be the first official remake of the story that has already been the inspiration of other versions, most notably Werner Herzog’s Nosferatu the Vampyre.
